Old Tokaido Highway

The Old Tōkaidō Highway is one of Japan’s ancient trade routes, the sea road where merchants and monks and other travellers journeyed between Tokyo and Kyoto. Nowadays, the route mostly crosses urban areas, and short sections only remain in nature. I walked from Tokyo to Kyoto in winter, carrying all my camping gear but opting to stay in cheap accommodation instead. It was a long urban walk in Japan.

I wrote a guide to the planning and logistics behind this hike, and a day to day blog. Both can be found underneath the stats below.

Departure date + point: 14 January 2017, Tokyo Nihonbashi
Arrival date + point: 3 February 2017, Kyoto Sanjo Ōhashi
Total distance walked: 585 km / 363.5 mi
Total days: 20
Walking days: 19
Zero days: 1
Average distance per day: 30.8 km / 19.1 mi
