Old Tokaido Highway

The Old Tōkaidō Highway is one of Japan’s ancient trade routes, the sea road where merchants and monks and other travellers journeyed between Tokyo and Kyoto. Nowadays, the route mostly crosses urban areas, and short sections only remain in nature. I walked from Tokyo to Kyoto in winter, carrying all my camping gear but opting to stay in cheap accommodation instead. It was a long urban walk in Japan.
